UNTITLED FANTASY CITY
Jacob Shell, 2009
This map includes complex topography, hilltop castles, fortifications, and canals which at times tunnel through steep bluffs. It isn’t really comparable to any real-world city, and so it is a more “fantastical” geofictional map than the ones I was doing in the 90s.
This is the only fantasy/fictional city map I’ve done which includes topographic symbology. I decided to try out a qualitative symbol for slopes: hachure lines.
I’ve included an example of hachure lines at the bottom of the page, with a comparison to contour lines.

Contour lines (left) vs hachure lines (right).
